The pilot project to create a Renewable Energy Community in Culatra, which is being promoted by C-COOP, within the scope of the Culatra2030 project, won the Prémios Verdes from Visão e Águas Portugal Magazine, in the Green Energy category.

The award was presented to Jóni dos Santos, president of C-COOP – Cooperative for the Sustainable Development of Culatra Island, the entity promoting the project "Culatra 2030 – Sustainable Energy Community", approved by ERSE in January 2023, and to André Pacheco, coordinator of the Culatra2030 initiative and researcher at the Centre for Marine and Environmental Research of the University of Algarve, in a ceremony that took place in Lisbon at the Alcantara Water factory, on Monday, the 5th June 2023.

Prémios Verdes Ceremony

André Pacheco - Culatra2030 coordinator

“Public recognition of good practices unites the community around a common goal i.e. for Culatra to adapt sustainably to the territory it inhabits, in the heart of the Ria Formosa Natural Park”.

Jóni dos Santos - CER President

“It was sensational for us! We are talking about Culatra, a small fishing island forgotten in the middle of the Ria Formosa that has fought to this day for basic living conditions. Being recognized as a national example seems like something out of this world, but this is the kind of record we want to continue in! All of this is only possible because people here (in Culatra) come together for the good of the community, and of course... we cannot fail to thank the Culatra2030 Initiative, which is acting as a catalyst, not only in the fight for sustainability, but also in defending the island’s identity.”
