Socioeconomic Model

The promoter of the Culatra Renewable Energy Community (REC) is C-COOP, a cooperative created in 2022 exclusively by residents. This cooperative has a broad social purpose, covering various socio-economic activities on the island, and functions as a community responsibility mechanism to protect, conserve and develop the fishing nucleus of Culatra, preserving its identity.

C-COOP aims to create a decentralized energy market capable of empowering this coastal community to become economically self-sufficient, resilient and adaptable to climate change scenarios, as well as combating energy poverty, promoting social cohesion and creating jobs.

Its vision is to create a REC in Culatra that produces its own energy and shares it, with the aim of providing 100% renewable energy to the community and implement a participatory economy model ensuring a fair distribution of costs and profits generated by the production of renewable energy, reinforcing the fight against energy poverty, and promoting social justice on the island. Furthermore, it reduces the price of electricity bills for residents while allowing investment in increasing solar energy production and the island’s self-sufficiency.

Achieving these objectives is essential to create long-term conditions for the residents of the Culatra fishing village to live in this fragile environment, continue their traditional economic activities, preserving their identity and cultural values, and seek new economic activities compatible with the rational use of natural resources, in accordance with the Culatra Energy Transition Agenda.
