The Island Awakens

The island of Culatra wants to be self-sustainable by 2030. Once it has won the right to inhabit the Ria Formosa, fishermen and shellfish gatherers are working together with the University of the Algarve and various local associations to begin a transition that includes, among other goals, capturing the sun and wind, combating plastic and coexisting with endangered species and habitats.

In a protected area marked by conflicts and various environmental challenges, Culatra is one of six European islands that the EU has selected to be a pilot community for renewable energies. The ultimate goal is to inspire other communities to follow suit.
